Dear Mr. Trump,
I am writing to let you know how deeply disturbed and disappointed I am in your behaviour before, during, and particularly after the election. This is the United States of America, where most every citizen over the age of 18 has the right, at least theoretically, to vote. Although the majority of us voted for Hillary Clinton, by a quirk of the electoral college system, you managed to win enough electoral votes to win the election. I was prepared to accept that and to keep an open mind, though your rhetoric throughout your campaign disgusted and sickened me. But you continue to make terrible decisions on a daily basis, your rhetoric is once again rising to a fevered pitch, and one thing becomes obvious: you do not take seriously your responsibility to ALL citizens of this nation! You do, whether you believe it or not, have the responsibility to act in ways that are in the best interest of the nation as a whole, in the best interest of every single man, woman and child living within our borders. I would think, knowing that the majority preferred your opponent, that you would be bending over backward to try to convince the citizens that you will try to do the right thing. I would expect you to try to begin healing the great divide that was caused by you and you alone during the past year. But you are failing miserably in that responsibility, and you have not even taken office yet!
Many ascribe to the theory “not my president”, and I am inclined, at this point, to agree with that. How can you be my president when you obviously intend to do everything in your power to take away my rights and the rights of most citizens? You say you want to “make America great again”, but you are going 180° in the opposite direction. And, for the record, America was already great. Certainly there were problems, things that could have been made better, but instead, you plan to take the things that were good but needed some tweaking and throw them out altogether. There is an expression … ‘don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater’ … and that is precisely what you are planning to do.
Take the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare. Certainly there are some problems with it and it is not as affordable as we would like. But overall, it has been a lifesaver for millions of people who could not get healthcare due to previously existing conditions or because they could not afford it. I know, because I am one of those people.
The future of our nation depends on bright, well-educated people in all fields: business, government, science, medicine, etc., yet you have chosen a woman, Betsy DeVos, who has a history of supporting private and charter schools, taking funding away from the public schools that are educating 90% of our children.
You have chosen as your top advisor a man who brags that he is the founder of alt-right, one of the most racist organizations in the country today. You have claimed that you will curtail our freedom of the press and file libel suits against any who write negatively about you, even though what we write may be quite accurate. And now you say you plan to further butcher our freedom of speech by taking away citizenship or imprisoning anyone who burns a flag. This, even though the Supreme Court has declared flag-burning to be a legal form of freedom of expression. I do not support flag-burning, but I do not see it as a crime against humanity, nor is it a crime that should require prison or loss of citizenship. And what comes next? Will you take away our rights to protest peacefully? Will you sue us for writing a letter of opinion to the media that puts you in an unfavourable light? Will you make it illegal for us to walk down the street wearing a Hillary Clinton t-shirt?
Our nation has worked toward equality for all races for more than 150 years. It has been a slow, often dangerous process, but many heroes have put their lives on the line to ensure that we live by the notion of equality. Now you have announced your intent to put a blatant racist, Jeff Sessions, into the position of Attorney General where he will almost certainly have the power to set race relations back at least 50 years, if not more.
You have decided to single-handedly make the U.S. the most hated nation on earth when you chose Myron Ebell to head the Environmental Protection Agency! What are you thinking? Why do you believe that you and Mr. Ebell know more than all the scientists in the world? Unlimited burning of fossil fuels, along with other human activities is having a negative impact on the environment, on the air we must breath, the land we must live on, and the water we must drink to sustain life. Do you honestly care so little for the citizens, not only of our own nation, but of the entire globe? Are you so arrogant that you believe yours is the last important life on this earth, that you care so little for future generations? You are dooming our grandchildren and great-grandchildren to a failing planet. We do not need to mine more coal, or build more pipelines to carry fracked oil. We need to invest in passive energy, to protect life on this planet, not only human, but plants and animals as well.
In sum, Mr. Trump, you cannot be my president, nor anybody else’s, until you show concern for every person living in the U.S. It would seem that the ‘past greatness’ you are planning to restore is that of two centuries ago, when women could neither vote nor own property, when African-Americans were slaves on cotton plantations, and when people who looked or acted differently were ostracized, sometimes murdered. You are not making intelligent decisions, but only decisions that appear to be destined to bring an end to our freedoms, an end to the nation that was created more than two centuries ago by brave, intelligent and caring people. You are a disgrace, and unless you make some serious changes in the way you plan to govern, I, and many others, will never be able to refer to you as president.
